Codes in this system are used to analyze the general health of the population, as well as monitor the incidence and prevalence of diseases and other health problems.
ICD-9 code sets have been in use since 1979; ICD-10 came into use in 1994. The U.S. is one of the few developed countries that have not transitioned to ICD-10. In January 2009, the Department of Health & Human Services established ICD-10 as the new U.S. coding standard and set an implementation date for October 1, 2013. Need more info?
