Explore a Career in Medical Coding

Picture

Take your first step toward a lucrative career as a medical coder! In this course, you'll learn how to use the CPT manual and the ICD-9-CM to find medical codes for any disease, condition, treatment, or surgical procedure. This knowledge will help prepare you to work almost anywhere in the medical field—doctors' offices, clinics, public health facilities, hospitals, labs, nursing homes, insurance agencies, or even the comfort of your own home.

We'll go through each of the main systems of the human body—integumentary (skin), musculoskeletal, respiratory, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, endocrine, and male and female genitourinary—outlining the medical terminology, conditions, diseases, injuries, treatments, and procedures you'll see most often in each of those systems.

Along the way, we'll go through lots of real-world examples and coding exercises to get you using your coding tools in conjunction with your analytical skills to come up with just the right codes to describe any medical situation. In the process, you'll get all the hands-on experience you'll need to code medical insurance claims with confidence. By the end of this course, you'll know how to find your way through both the CPT manual and the ICD-9-CM manual, and you'll be well on your way to a career as a medical coder!

What is a Certified Professional Coder (CPC)?

A Certified Professional Coder has proven by rigorous examination and experience that they know how to code, rationales for why particular codes are used and can do so both efficiently and effectively. A CPC® can review and adjudicate coding of services, procedures and diagnoses on medical claims in the physician-office setting, thus improving the finances and operational efficiency of the practice.  The CPC®'s abilities include:
  • Proficiency in adjudicating claims for accurate medical coding for diagnoses, procedures and services in physician-based settings
  • Proficiency across a wide range of services, which include evaluation and management, anesthesia, surgical services, radiology, pathology and medicine
  • Sound knowledge of medical coding rules and regulations including compliance and reimbursement. A trained medical coding professional can better handle issues such as medical necessity, claims denials, bundling issues and charge capture
  • Knowing how to integrate medical coding and reimbursement rule changes into a practice's reimbursement processes
  • Knowledge of anatomy, physiology and medical terminology necessary to correctly code provider diagnosis and services

The benefits that Project Xtern provides for participants include:

  • Real coding experience for formally-trained coders.
  • A chance for newly-accredited coders to demonstrate their skills outside of the classroom.
  • Credit toward the 2 years of experience needed to remove the apprentice status from the CPC-A credential.
  • Hands-on experience and resume material needed to land a permanent coding job.
